CBD - Is It Just Hype? The Benefits Explained

So CBD is becoming a familiar term & a hot new trend. It seems that everyone from Heart Surgeons and MMA Fighters to Makeup Artists are singing their praises. What are the facts though and what benefits can truly be derived from using CBD?

In a world full of hype, sometimes it seems that every product on the market is either 'new and improved' or a 'recently discovered miracle'. So much of this gets thrown at us that it is easy to become immune to it and completely overlook the news when what might actually be considered 'a miracle of nature' does make it to the mainstream.

That could be the case with CBD, used for literally thousands of years in Eastern and traditional folk medicine to treat a wide variety of ailments. Unfortunately, though, due to legalities involving their source, they became unavailable in all but a few isolated locations. That has changed. They are back on the market in a big way and for once the hype may be true.

First of all, what exactly is CBD?

CBD is short for cannabidiol, a naturally occurring chemical compound found in the Cannabis Sativa Plant. You might be more familiar with this herb by another name; cannabis or hemp. Unlike its closely related cousin THC (delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol), derived from the same plant family, CBD is non-psychoactive and will not have you walking on sunshine.

How does CBD work?

Your body produces its own form of CBD known as endocannabinoids. It has two forms of receptors that utilise these:

  • CB1 receptors are present throughout the body, particularly in the brain, and are primarily related to emotion, pain, movement, mood, thinking, appetite and memories.
  • CB2 receptors are more common in the immune system and work to regulate pain and inflammation.

CBD binds with these receptors and triggers the endocrine system to produce its own cannabinoids.

CBD Health Benefits

According to recent studies by the United States National Institute of Health, it was reported that there was enough empirical data available to suggest that CBD can help treat...(DEEP BREATH):

  • Anxiety and depression
  • Arthritis or joint pain
  • Chronic pain
  • Cluster and other headaches
  • Migraines
  • Nausea
  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)
  • Sleep disorders
  • Parkinson's Disease
  • Multiple sclerosis (MS)
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Cancer
  • Epilepsy and other seizure disorders
  • Lung conditions

What is CBD Oil?

CBD is non-water soluble so the body finds it harder to absorb it in its natural state. For your body to make use of it, it must go through what is known as a decarbonisation process. That is a High Street way of saying it has to be heated and bound to a fatty substance before your body can absorb it. Coconut and hemp seed oils are the most commonly used as they are considered healthy by themselves but bacon grease would work just as well!
